A Chinese herbal medicine consultation is a process in which our qualified TCM practitioner assesses a patient's health and prescribes herbal remedies to address their specific health concerns. Here is a description of what typically happens during a Chinese herbal medicine consult:

  1. Patient Interview: The consultation begins with an in-depth interview in which the practitioner asks the patient about their medical history, current health issues, lifestyle, diet, and any specific symptoms they are experiencing. This information is crucial in understanding the patient's overall health and identifying patterns of imbalance in traditional Chinese medicine.

  2. Examination: The practitioner may perform various diagnostic procedures such as observing the patient's tongue and taking the patient's pulse. These are essential components of TCM diagnosis, and they provide valuable insights into the patient's internal health.

  3. Pattern Identification: Based on the information gathered from the interview and examination, the TCM practitioner identifies the patient's pattern of disharmony. In Chinese herbal medicine, health issues are often seen as imbalances in the body's vital energies, known as Qi and Blood, and the concept of Yin and Yang. The practitioner will determine which organs or systems are affected and the nature of the imbalance, such as excess or deficiency.

  4. Herbal Prescription: Using the pattern identification, the TCM practitioner will create a customized herbal prescription. This prescription may consist of a combination of various herbs, which are chosen for their specific properties and functions to rebalance the patient's system. The practitioner will consider not only the patient's primary health concern but also any underlying imbalances or constitution.

  5. Treatment Plan: The practitioner will discuss the treatment plan with the patient including how and when to take the herbal remedies. Herbal formulas can be administered in various forms, such as decoctions, powders, capsules, or tablets, depending on the patient's preferences and the nature of the condition.

  6. Follow-Up: Chinese herbal medicine often involves multiple follow-up appointments to monitor the patient's progress, adjust the herbal formula as needed, and ensure the treatment is effective. The number and frequency of follow-up visits will vary depending on the patient's condition.

  7. Dietary and Lifestyle Advice: In addition to herbal remedies, the TCM practitioner may provide guidance on dietary and lifestyle changes to support the healing process and prevent future imbalances.
