How acupuncture supports fertility- what the research says.

If you're on a fertility journey, you've likely explored every option available to you — and you may have heard acupuncture come up more than once. That's not by accident. Over the past two decades, a growing body of research has examined how this ancient practice can support modern fertility efforts, whether you're trying to conceive naturally or undergoing assisted reproductive technologies like IVF.

At Odenton Acupuncture, we work with many patients navigating fertility challenges, and we believe in combining time-tested Traditional Chinese Medicine with the latest evidence. The data on acupuncture and fertility has become increasingly compelling.

A 2025 meta-analysis published in ScienceDirect analyzed 25 clinical trials involving 4,757 participants and found that acupuncture significantly improved outcomes for women undergoing IVF.  Clinical pregnancy rates were 43.6% in the acupuncture group compared to 33.2% in the control group, and live birth rates were 38.0% versus 28.7%, respectively.

A separate meta-analysis published in the British Medical Journal, reviewing seven studies of acupuncture used alongside IVF, found that acupuncture increased the chance of pregnancy by 65% compared to control groups.

A 2025 systematic review and network meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Endocrinology assessed multiple acupuncture treatment schedules and their impact on assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes, finding that the timing and frequency of acupuncture sessions matters and that certain protocols show clear advantages in improving pregnancy outcomes.

A comprehensive review of 72 randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture enhances endometrial receptivity, egg quality, and embryo implantation rates, substantiating acupuncture's role in increasing pregnancy rates overall.

So why does acupuncture work? Research points to several interconnected pathways.

1. Improved Blood Flow to the Uterus and Ovaries

One of the most well-documented effects of acupuncture is its ability to increase circulation to the reproductive organs. Studies have shown that acupuncture can decrease uterine artery impedance, improving blood flow to the uterus and creating a more hospitable environment for embryo implantation. A study published in Human Reproduction found that electroacupuncture significantly reduced the uterine artery pulsatility index (PI) in infertile women, a key marker of improved blood flow.

Better blood flow means a better-nourished, thicker endometrial lining and a well-perfused endometrium is far more likely to support successful implantation.

2. Hormone Regulation

Acupuncture influences the body's neuroendocrine system, particularly the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, the command center for reproductive hormones. Research shows it may stimulate the production of β-endorphins, which in turn affect gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion. This cascade helps regulate key hormones including LH, FSH, and estrogen, supporting more regular ovulation and healthier menstrual cycles.

For women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), one of the most common causes of infertility, acupuncture has shown particular promise. A study published in PMC/NIH found that acupuncture is effective for regulating hormone levels, promoting ovulation, and reducing insulin resistance in patients with PCOS, by targeting elevated LH and testosterone levels that disrupt normal ovarian function.

3. Stress Reduction

Chronic stress is a well-known disruptor of fertility. Elevated cortisol levels can interfere with the pituitary gland's ability to regulate reproductive hormones- essentially telling the body this isn't a safe time to conceive.

Acupuncture has been shown to modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the body's primary stress response system, reducing cortisol and promoting a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state. For patients going through the emotional and physical demands of fertility treatment, this stress-buffering effect alone can be profoundly supportive.

4. Enhanced Endometrial Receptivity

A 2025 literature review published in PMC focused specifically on acupuncture's role in endometrial receptivity, the uterus's readiness to accept an embryo. The review found that acupuncture and moxibustion improve endometrial receptivity by increasing endometrial thickness, improving blood flow parameters (reduced pulsatility and resistance indices), and balancing hormone levels including estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P).

Acupuncture as Part of Your Fertility Plan

Acupuncture works best as part of an integrative approach. Many reproductive endocrinologists now support patients incorporating acupuncture alongside IVF cycles, and research suggests that timing matters — protocols administered around the time of embryo transfer, as well as throughout the stimulation phase, show the most benefit.

Whether you are:

  • Trying to conceive naturally and looking to optimize your cycle

  • Navigating a diagnosis like PCOS, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility

  • Currently in an IVF or IUI cycle

  • Supporting your partner's sperm health (research shows acupuncture benefits male fertility too)

...acupuncture may have a meaningful role to play in your journey.

At Odenton Acupuncture, we tailor every treatment plan to your individual needs and cycle timing. If you're on a fertility journey and curious about how acupuncture can support you, we'd love to connect.
